Stables is an impressive 73.34 x 157.48 cm (28.87 x 62 in.) oil on canvas by the German artist Franz Marc, a late 19th and early 20th-century artist who was fundamental for the development of German Expressionism. Marc's work depicts animals and landscapes with intense stylization and expressive and strong use of color. He became pivotal for a broader understanding of art and painting along with his contemporaries. The painter's formal research ended in stellar and complex color arrangements. Stables is one of Marc's masterpieces, with an intense abstraction of the figures and a multicolored approach.
Franz Marc was born in 1880. He was the son of a landscape painter and had the intention of graduating in philology. His plans were interrupted by having to serve in the military, and eventually, he made up his mind to study art. The German artist had classes with Wilhelm von Diez and Gabriel von Hackl, two significant painters from their time. He grew unsatisfied with the academic conventions, and after a trip to Paris where he became fascinated by the works of Van Gogh and Edouard Manet, Marc decided to be self-taught.
Around 1910, Kandinsky and Franz Marc met, and together they formed the group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Knight), who organized artistic publications. The group intended to make art that wasn't attached to figuration and while exploring the spiritual connotations of color. Since then, Marc's work took an intense radicalization, maintaining a dialogue with Cubism and Futurism.
Stables was painted on a large rectangular canvas with an orientation that emphasizes its width. As it is known through the artist's many depictions of horses, this was his favorite subject. The year 1913, when this work was painted, was marked by Marc's shift in spiritual comprehension. While he would search for the subject's individuality in the past, the artist shifted to a universal view through abstraction.
It seems that there are four horses in the picture, as Marc transformed them into rigid shapes of color. The artwork was created in what is known as a color field painting. Some of the horses' forms can be distinguished among the geometric work, but they mingle with the triangles, squares, and columns of color. Stables was painted with red, blue, yellow, pink, and orange, and its abstract rendition makes the viewer's eye inquisitively travel along with the picture, searching for forms and figures.
