FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.

Many might consider the painting of landscapes to be a subject matter somewhat devoid of genuine emotion, an art form that would wither and vanish with the growth in popularity and capacity of photography, which would substitute it as a form of taking audiences to the corners of the Earth. As such, it is perhaps the Hudson River School’s greatest deed to contradict that point of view, showing beyond doubt the wealth of emotion that can be contained in a rocky, uninhabited landscape. While in many instances that characteristic can be rather obvious, where the artist conveys in their work a profound feeling of awe at the sublime nature shown in their paintings, in others, such as this beautiful sunset painted by Frederic Edwin Church in 1865, a more profound knowledge of the artist’s life and historical context is necessary to truly grasp the layers of meaning imparted by the application of brush on canvas.
In the year this oil on canvas was finished, so was the American Civil War, a conflict which had left grievous wounds, physical and psychological, on the people of the USA. As such, it was a moment not only of grief but of rebuilding, a new start for the country. Speaking of grief, in March of that same year the artist has lost a son and a daughter in a devastating way, taken from this world by diphtheria. As such, the artist produces this fantastic depiction of a sunset over Mount Desert Island, one of his favorite subject matters and the setting of a number of his paintings, taken by a deep grief, which is reflected in his use of light, which, instead of producing the usual miraculous light show, speaks of endings and of the dwindling of the beautiful light.
The mood of the painting is not entirely negative or pessimistic. Even though the landscape is much darker than usually portrayed by Church, it is still sublime, as if to say that, even though darkness spreads over the land, the land remains beautiful, meaning that there will be a time where light returns and the sun will shine once more.
The painting is today in possession of the Kemper Art Museum, part of the Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and is shown in the Mildred Lane Gallery.
