FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.

Often mentioned as one of the leading names of Western Art, Frederic Remington was not, ironically, a man of the West. Instead, he would keep his studios in New York, his hometown, or Connecticut. Still, the artist’s inspiration and references had to come from somewhere, and to that end, Remington would often travel West, eventually even becoming a landowner. During those travels, he would carefully observe and sketch those who he believed best represented the soul of the Wild West, and his depictions of them would become one of the genre’s main aesthetic influences, dictating the cowboy look for years and years to come.
Probably produced in 1908, this oil on canvas was initially left Untitled, but eventually received its current name when it was put up for auction years later. It is said to have been inspired by one of Remington’s many visits to the ranches owned by Buffalo Bill, Western legend, in Wyoming. Initially bought by private collectors, it was later donated to the Coe Foundation, who, in turn, would donate it to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming, where it is now kept in show.
Here, Remington depicted the quintessential cowboy look. Mounted in a thin and small, almost gaunt, mustang, the man is dressed in shades of brown and beige, becoming almost one with his environment. From the shade of his hat’s brim, he stares straight at the artist or the observer, self-assured and unafraid. Furthermore, his posture is relaxed, showing that he feels right at home in his current situation. This man is not only a resident of his environment but instead an integral part of it, exerting his control by blending into such an extent that would make it difficult for future generations to think about the West without thinking of men like this.
One interesting thing to note is the opulence of the cowboy’s attire for the time. When we compare the garb represented here to other paintings by Remington, we see that this specific cowboy stands out in the quality of his equipment, which is likely to have been due to him being one of Buffalo Bill’s men and as such having a more stable existence. Finally, it is worth noting that the man’s face is left blank, allowing an observer to place oneself in that place, fulfilling their boyish fantasies.
