One of the primary influences behind the construction of the American cowboy persona, Frederic Remington was more than a traditional painter; he was also a sculptor and writer, crafts which he employed complementary to drive his narrative of the Wild West. To do that, Remington would often create a painting to illustrate a story or to serve as a reference and even marketing for a sculpture. The latter can be understood to be the rationale behind this 1895 oil on canvas, produced around the same time as his wildly famous sculpture by the same name that captures the action a split second before the painting.
Here Remington portrays the very soul of what he had construed to be the American cowboy: men of extreme courage and restricted resources facing down nature by themselves and taming it by the sheer imposition of will. Everything about the main character in this painting screams confidence and domain of man over his environment, while the horse’s bucking body is deformed in a spasm of savagery, its eyes wide in the desperate struggle against a force that means to tame and contain it.
Even so, both beings seem to move as extensions of each other. Thrown in the air by the bronco’s wild aggression, the cowboy’s body leans back as the horse’s body lurches forward in an attempt to unseat his rider, but such is the connection that they become one instead. Adding to the scene is the calm background of clear blue skies and endless plains where the cowboy’s peers placidly watch the development of the scene as it unfolds, their attitude indicating that this is not an uncommon sight, but instead an expected part of their daily routine.
As usual, Remington uses his narrative talent to create a piece that, while extremely focused on its subject matter, offers abundant parallel life, hinting at a much broader context and leaving several questions to be answered by the observers themselves. Why, for example, is the cowboy armed while undertaking such an intense activity? Is his environment hostile or in any way not trustworthy? Does that mean that the action is taking place not in a ranch, but the wilds? Why then would the cowboy decide to attempt the risky taming far from home and hearth? While the answers to those questions are beyond the scope of the painting, our imaginations can easily find them, as that is part of this painting’s value.
