Flags on the Waldorf is an incredible 79.4 x 92.1 cm (31 1/4 x 36 1/4 in.) oil painting. The piece was painted by Frederick Childe Hassam, an influential painter from his period. Painted in 1916, the artwork belongs to a series of Hassam's works that engaged more directly with patriotic feelings. While many of the 18th and 19th century North American artists engaged this feeling through their beautiful renditions of landscapes and urban scenes, this is probably one of the most direct statements towards it. The works were highly associated with the beginning of World War I and the US's involvement with it, and Hassam painted it as a way to keep spirits high.
Flags on the Waldorf was painted in rectangular canvas, emphasizing the heights of the buildings. The fixation with urbanization had accompanied Hassam since the 1880s. During that decade, he made two trips to Europe, in which he absorbed the innovations of the Impressionists and applied them to American settings. Hassam was always proud of his nationality and his family's history, which had a long relation to New England. In this period of global turmoil, and in his late age, Hassam made this feeling clearer with his flag paintings.
The Waldorf–Astoria Hotel, which gives the title to the work, is the building with the Greek columns on the composition's right. From its architecture, it's possible to see it's a very wealthy construction. After it was demolished, the Empire State Building was built in its place. The work shows Fifth Avenue, and in the busy street with many cars and a walking crowd on the sidewalk, the audience is informed that this is a busy spot in New York.
Hassam painted Flags on the Waldorf with very thick paint, one of the most vital traits of his body of work. The image is very light, and the street and sidewalks were painted with a mixture of light brown, grey, white, and a light blue. The people walking on the sidewalk and the cars going to the horizon line are done as blotches of color, non-defined contours, almost as walking silhouettes. The flags can be seen mainly in the middle portion of the picture, while the buildings extend to the top. The vanishing point is dominated by gestural blue and white brushstrokes.
