In a French Garden is an oil on canvas by Frederick Childe Hassam. Hassam was a significant figure in his time, becoming a model artist to his peers, starting as an illustrator, and seeking a sort of autonomous artistic education. Along with some of his peers, Hassam was fundamental in criticizing a more traditional and conservative view of American art. Together, they championed what became known as American Impressionism: the adaptation of Impressionistic techniques, such as visible brushstrokes and broken color, to American themes such as regional landscapes.
In a French Garden is an excellent example of the painter's mature style, employing a light palette and thick paint. The picture is a stunning presentation of Hassam's interest in lighting effects. At the bottom right corner, a woman wearing a blue dress sits on a table and reads a newspaper. She has her back turned to the audience. The chair she's sitting seems to be done with a dry brush and is painted with black, although some of the canvas's priming can be noticed as well. A dog sits by her left as if waiting for her or keeping her company.
Hassam took a chromatic approach to this painting. The shadows close to the woman, which go until the middle of the picture, are done with varying colors: purple, blue, and dark brown. These colors create a strong contrast with the more yellow-tinted points of light. Through the floor closer to her, some circles of light painted with white and yellow suggest an intense sun.
One of Hassam's most prominent traits is clear on In a French Garden: his use of small or staccato brushstrokes. Masterfully, and a little bit akin to the likes of the Barbizon School, Hassam constructed the garden with beautiful tones of green. The leaves, bushes, and flowers alternate from light green, to dark green, red, and orange. From the picture's middle to the top, the painting is dominated by yellow in the buildings, clouds, and grass.
A small portion of the sky is seen through a triangle formed by the building's structures. The sky was painted with gestural brushstrokes of a light blue and very thick white and yellow clouds.
