The Fourth of July is a striking 91.44 cm x 66.36 cm (36 x26.13 in.) oil painting by Frederick Childe Hassam and now belongs to a private collection. Hassam was a late 19th and early 20th-century artist who was fundamental in adapting and creating impressive landscapes influenced by the Impressionists. After World War I, the painter felt inspired to work on more clearly nationalistic themes. He painted almost thirty pictures of the same subjects: flags in urban settings. Despite its strong thematic, in its manner, the work is almost abstract, a study of brushwork and color.
The Fourth of July is exemplary in American Modernism. Like the Hudson River School or even the Abstract Expressionists, the American Impressionists also had a solid relation to patriot meanings. This gets clear on the series of works that Hassam did on flags. The picture was painted on a rectangular canvas, emphasizing its height, and painted with blue, red, white, and black for the details. The scene on the streets with the cars and the crowd is almost abstract. It seems a long-exposure blurred picture. This aesthetic choice gives a greater focus to the flags, which start close to the viewer until the horizon. The work is very gestural, and through his brushstrokes, Hassam imbues it with an energetic quality. The red, which is only present in the flags, create a stronger attraction and contrast than the rest of the composition, which has a blue tint.
Hassam was one of the most productive painters of his time, creating more than 3000 works. He started working with wood engraving and became an illustrator. The artist experimented with watercolor and later, after being inspired by en plein air painting while traveling in Europe, started using oil painting. Hassam turned his interest to cityscapes, something that he explored with the maximum atmospheric effect.
Through the American Watercolor Society, Hassam met some other fellow painters who also had a great passion for the Impressionists. Together, they were essential to a more experimental and Modernist manner in American painting. Their landscapes aim to praise the local US settings, and their color harmony is complex, subtle, and more significant immersion effect. Their production was called “American Impressionism,” and its reception was very polarizing. In 1898, this group became known as The Ten. They were against the conservative approach of many art institutions at the time and defended greater artistic freedom.
