The Goldfish Window is a beautiful 87.31 x 128.59 cm (34 3/8 x 50 5/8 in.) oil painting by the American painter Frederick Childe Hassam and now belongs to the Currier Museum of Art. The Goldfish Window is an excellent example of Childe Hassam's maturity as an artist. Exploring its most intense renditions, Hassam makes a beautiful exploration of lighting and color harmony. The painter presents a relatively familiar scene with a cinematographic-like composition. With the harsh sun on the outside, the fishbowl's lighting refraction, and the interior's shading, Hassam created an intense and captivating scene.
In The Goldfish Window, Hassam posits the spectator inside a house, looking frontally at a lady in her profile. The first section that pulls the eye in the middle is the intense yellow grass on the outside. A dark green shade occupies most of the center, creating a contrast to its sunlit counterparts around it. Also, in the composition's center, there is a brown table with blue shadows. Two goldfish are swimming inside the fishbowl. Hassam masterfully explored the subtle lighting variations inside the room, using different tones of yellow and light, which creates unity to the yellow outside. The curtains were created with pink and light orange, making another frame around the wall, emphasizing the window and the outside.
During his early career, Hassam started working in the wood engraving business. Soon enough, he was able to open a company of his own and turn to illustration. The artist took a taste for watercolor and began to see it as an artistic production as well. His works were exhibited, and he made some trips to Europe. There, he was fascinated by the European sights and became acquainted with the Modernist production, and particularly impressed by the Barbizon School.
Eventually moving to New York at the end of the 1880s, Hassam became an American Watercolor Society member. There, he met other painters that also were interested in Modernist aesthetics. Keeping a similar interest in works that dealt intimately with colors, texture, and other formal characteristics, these painters created The Ten. Together, they defended American Impressionism and less realistic works, seeking greater creative freedom.
