Frederick George Cotman's One Of The Family is a heartwarming reproduction of rural family life in the late-nineteenth century.
Idealistic, sentimental, and relentlessly nostalgic, it is still a charming picture of rustic domesticity and has remained a popular favourite in the United Kingdom for over a century. It is imbued with the warm glow of a Romantic painting but basks in the joy and enthusiasm of life at home. It was painted from a number of sketches, all recorded from life at the Black Boy Inn at Hurley on Thames. Within the frame a farmer returns home from his daily toil for a meal, with his horse closely following behind, sticking its head through the window. Acquired by the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool in 1880 it received great acclaim from the city-folk who admired its positive outlook and heartfelt camaraderie with the animals depicted. Cotman's canvas also depicts the man of the house alongside his three young children, surrounded by their dog and elderly grandmother. The immediacy and warmth of the scene is heightened by the fact that the family have already started to eat, bringing a casual homeliness to this moment.
Born in Ipswich, Cotman ventured to London in his youth to train at the Royal Academy, beginning his life as a portrait painter, and displaying the same blend of humour and harmony that characterized his later works. Winning his first Gold Medal for history painting in 1873. Cotman travelled around Europe, charming the Paris art scene in the Belle Epoque era with his unique approach to Romantic Realism. Returning to his home in later life he created works of local colour such as One Of The Family, and dominated the market with cheerful reproductions of family life. Movingly, the sitters used for the family members were themselves an actual family whose names and lives have been traced. It is a moving thought to think that Cotman's highly staged image was in fact born of a domestic reality.
