Home Again is an outstanding oil painting by the Australian painter Frederick McCubbin. The original painting was done in 1884 and currently belongs to the National Gallery of Victoria. Frederick McCubbin was one of the leading painters of Australian Impressionism. This circle of painters was known as the Heidelberg School, and they were primarily organized in Melbourne, which hosted most of their major shows. Frederick McCubbin was one of the first Australian painters to engage in the practice of en plein air painting, which was a fundamental feature of Impressionism. Home Again is the masterpiece of his early work.
The artwork was painted on a sizeable rectangular canvas. Along with other pictures by McCubbin, this work sought to highlight the importance of the pioneer women, as they called the colonists. A considerable part of McCubbin’s work was directed at the pioneers and anonymous workers building structures and roads. As it was the case of American Impressionism, Australian Impressionism was influenced by French painting, but it was highly linked to the regional identity of the country. In this sense, Australian Impressionism built the bases for Australian painting, which didn’t have a defined identity.
It is believed that the setting of Home Again was based on McCubbin’s kitchen. The picture has a clear narrative element, as is highlighted by its title. On the left side, a woman is ironing clothes. One of her hands lies on the iron pressed against a long white piece of fabric, while the other one is on her head. Her hair is blonde, and she wears a long black dress with a blue apron. Close to her are many domestic objects on the wall, and in the lower area, more clothing is waiting to be ironed. The woman is looking surprised to the right.
Coming through the door is a man, supposedly her husband. He is wearing a black hat, a light blue shirt, and beige trousers. Close to his leg, a black dog is jumping on his leg, showing excitement. The man enters with his arms open, showing affection toward the woman. Between them are more domestic objects, and all the detail of the environment shows McCubbin’s aim of detailing every aspect of the daily life of the pioneers. Home Again is a unique work of Australian art and a picture that will captivate any audience with its singular charm.
