Sioux Indians Hunting Buffalo is an impressive hand-colorized lithograph. The work was initially published in one of Catlin’s Indian Portfolios. These were drawings or paintings he transferred to lithography to create albums for his work to get to a broader audience. It is originally dated 1844.
Catlin was a 19th-century American artist who focused on the depiction of indigenous communities. He made many trips to their lands during the 1830s. From the 1840s until the end of his life, Catlin tried to sell his “Indian Gallery” to the government. They didn’t take his offers, but towards the end of his life, he made a deal with The Smithsonian Institution, who bought a significant part of his body of work. Sioux Indians Hunting Buffalo, also known as Buffalo Hunt, is one epic hunting scene led by some indigenous warriors.
The composition shows three warriors riding their horses on green hills while chasing the big group of buffalos. The hills are enormous, and the composition gives it a more heroic flair than the usual portraits of George Catlin. Some of his narrative scenes have more of an illustrative feeling and less realistic dimension. Probably, because they were published as books, Catlin must have aimed at a broader audience. As such, Sioux Indians Hunting Buffalo has the feeling of the now-familiar narratives about the huntings and adventures of the indigenous population.
The packed line of buffalos is fleeing from the left to the right side of the composition. Closer to the audience, two warriors are very close to the animals. One rides a dark horse watching the big buffalo on his right; the other is on a white horse and aims his arrow direction of the buffalo close to him. Farther away, another warrior is hunting with his bow.
The grass was painted light green with some yellow areas. The sky is open and bright white. Further, on the right, the grass gets darker and colder. The horses and the hunters’ features are rendered more schematically than in the portraits of single individuals. Still, Sioux Indians Hunting Buffalo was clearly derived out of Catlin’s observations on his trips. He keeps the fidelity of the animals, the scenery, and the indigenous clothing. The composition is dynamic and allows the viewer to look at it contemplatively, absorbing its many details.
