Home At Montclair is a stunning landscape painting by the 19th-century American painter George Inness. The original painting was done in 1892 and now belongs to The Clark Museum Collection. George Inness was one of the most praised American painters of his time, influenced by the Hudson River and Barbizon schools. His artistic proposal seemed to stem from both movements, being capable of painting exact and detailed paintings and sometimes favoring a more gestural and expressive style. In some of his best works, Inness fused both sensibilities. Homer At Montclair is a captivating view that embodies how Inness painted like no other artist.
The artwork was painted on a 76.5 x 114.3 cm canvas. This was a standard size of choice by Inness during this time. During those years, Inness lived in Montclair, New Jersey. The place served many times as a scenario for his more daring and formally ambitious paintings. Because of works such as Home At Montclair, Inness is often linked with a proto-modernist output. He was undoubtedly indebted to more traditional painting, a lifelong admirer of Claude Lorrain. Still, his work got progressively more akin to European painting and finding a new vigor in his last years of life.
Home At Montclair shows a field on a typical winter day. As he did in many works of this time, Inness painted a warm, intense first layer of color in an almost homogeneous way on the canvas. Above it, he painted gesturally, applying thin layers of turpentine-diluted paint. Yet, his work is precise and enchanting and also capable of evoking some Realism even at its most simplified or fast rendition.
The painting’s horizon line is slightly above the composition’s middle. A road with reddish-brown fences side by side runs diagonally through the field, dividing it into two. On the left side, along with the thickly painted areas of coldish white, there are also beautiful, captivating flowers painted with a different white tone. On the left side, the field is also covered by snow and some thin trees that rise high. Most of the trees lack any leaves in their branches, except a greener one, which is very close to the center and partially covers Inness’ house. Home At Montclair is an impressive artwork that will seduce any spectator to contemplate its strong, beautiful passages of color.

If you're considering not framing your painting at all, you may opt for a Gallery Wrap. The term Gallery Wrap refers to the way the canvas is stretched, which is by wrapping it around thick stretcher bars, about 1.5 inch thick, with the canvas being secured to the back rather than the sides of those bars.
All orders ship with UPS, FedEx or DHL and will arrive directly to your home or office. A tracking number will be emailed to you as soon as the order leaves our studio so you can track it online. All orders ship express and usually arrive within 4-5 days from the shipping date. Due to shipping restraints, many of our framed, stretched, and oversize paintings may take 6-21 days for arrival depending on the safest route determined by the postal service.
Unframed paintings are covered with a special protective film, are gently rolled and then placed inside a strong specially designed tube.
Stretched, Gallery Wrapped and Framed paintings are covered with protective bubble wrap, separated by foam board and then carefully put into the cardboard box.
