Gerrit Van Honthorst's Childhood of Christ is a testament to the immense influence that Caravaggio's chiaroscuro technique had made so soon after the Italian master's death. Painted in
1620 Von Honthorst's reproduction of a biblical scene is an elegant appropriation of the compositional and thematic revolution Caravaggio's work had initiated in Northern Europe. Thereafter, the Dutch master became one of the leading followers of the style. One of the first paintings created after spending a decade in Rome studying the works of the Italian master of rustic drama, Von Honthorst's take on the pre-cinematic lighting and frozen drama of the chiaroscuro led to international acclaim. Born in Utrecht, Childhood of Christ was painted the same year the artist returned to his home city after his time in Italy. Soon after he would apply his skill and craft to domestic scenes of contemporary life, and Childhood of Christ would be one of his last religious scenes. The artificiality of the light in his scenes is without doubt a powerful evocation of the individuality of personal faith.
Childhood of Christ is most likely a figurative reproduction of a story from the childhood of Jesus Christ in which the young messiah helps his father, a carpenter by trade, with some advice on his craft. Setting the dramatic tale of the bearer of redemption in such a humble domestic scene was a revolutionary step in the early seventeenth century, and coincided with a vigorous dismantling and re-thinking of man's relationship with God. Soon after, Western Europe would plunge into the apocalyptic Thirty Years War, chiefly fought over intricate readings of scripture and divergent interpretations of the meaning of personal salvation. Childhood of Christ is therefore no chocolate-box image of youth, it is a challenge to the old order and a reproduction of the techniques of an immensely controversial iconoclast.
