Gilbert Stuart was the leading portrait artist of the period following the American Revolutionary War and in a lengthly career managed to capture reproductions from life of over individuals, conjuring a remarkable vision of the early years of the United States. His iconic image of George Washington, The Athenaeum, has appeared on the American one-dollar bill and his portraits of the first six Presidents of the United States are emblematic and archetypal images of the humble, the brave, and the visionary. His 1806 portrait Washington at Dorchester Heights remembers George Washington at the Fortification of Dorchester Heights in 1775, an event which preceded the end of the Siege of Boston and the retreat of the British troops. Washington's Continental Army occupied the hill range, offering an impeccable strategic view of Boston harbour and installed their most potent cannons there. Choosing to flee the ominous escalation, the British left for Nova Scotia.
An immensely popular commercial portraitist, Stuart certainly enjoyed the dividends accumulated by the pressing of reproductions, and consequently portraits were notoriously difficult to prise from Stuart's studio once retained for engraving and reproduction. Clearly the enduring magic of his majestic portraits, wherein the embryonic potential of the United States gestated, captivated the artist himself. As his success grew, Stuart became paranoid about the possibility that unauthorized reproductions may be allowed to circulate. In one instance Stuart chose, as an early exercise of intellectual property rights, to slander the quality of a engraved reproduction circulating in the early years of the 1800s of his Athenaeum portrait. With the public on his side, many of which even took to the streets in defence of Stuart's works, the artist was persuaded to paint another Washington portrait; Washington at Dorchester Heights. Despite numerous requests it would be the last he would paint of the first American President, fearing the proliferation of unauthorised copies that his previous works suffered.
