Canaletto's 1732 painting The Return of the Ducal Palace, Venice or Bucentoro to the Molo on Ascension Day is a masterful reproduction of a view from the traditional Venetian ceremony. One of a series of scenes of the Grand Canal painted by Canaletto, this is certainly the most accomplished selection. The ceremony shown celebrated the Venetian Republic's earlier dominance over the art of seafaring — the backbone of their trade economy and military might — which was viewed with nostalgia by the eighteenth century. Celebrating the glory of former times, the painting commemorates a victorious naval battle over Dalmatia on Ascension Day in 998 AD. Evidently, the illustrious pageant was performed with pomp and pride. The Doge traveled out to the lido in a golden yacht, casting a ring into the waters as a symbol of the union between Venice and the Adriatic. The ceremonial barge in Canaletto's painting was designed by the great Stefano Conti and was an emblematic symbol of the old Republic with its swaying orange flag, clearly attracting the artist's eye for the majestic.
Canaletto, hailing from Venice, was a popular and highly renowned landscape painter. In the tradition of the Vedutisti, the artist travelled the great cities of his age painting vivid and bombastic reproductions of the city vistas. Becoming enthralled with the city of Rome, and later London, Canaletto had a remarkable eye for intricate detail and dramatic flourishes, all rendered in an almost Impressionist style. Later relocating to England for a decade, his popularity surged as he captured the uncomfortable mood of nostalgia evident in the mid-eighteenth century, as Western Europe approached the overhauls of the French Revolution. Yet, his atmospheric reproduction of the effects of light and his resolute insistence on painting en plein air, made Canaletto an ambitious forerunner of the techniques and idiosyncrasies that would come to define modern painting a century later.
