The unique and outstanding piece called Interior Court of the Doge's Palace is one of a kind between the significant collections of Canaletto's representations of canals and ports in Venice. The artist has been accurately considered one of the most relevant Venetian cityscape painters since then, and his masterpieces are known worldwide for its truthfulness to detail and impressive representation of urban scenes.
He started his relationship with art early in his life. When a teenager, he was an apprentice to his father, and alongside his brother, the three of them moved to Rome to work on painting theater sceneries. After this initial contact with art, Canaletto started following and applauding the work of the famed architectural painter Giovanni Paolo Pannini, probably the first inspiration. That is when the painter first had the urge to start painting the daily life of people around the city.
Canaletto came back to Venice in 1719 and then started studying under the mastership of Luca Carlevarijs. He quickly surpassed his master, and traders began celebrating the work of the artist, saying Canaletto painted very similar styles to Carlevarijs, but with more life and shine to it. Soon, everyone around Venice wanted to be the owner of one of his majestic pieces.
The layout in Interior Court of the Doge's Palace stands out because most of Canaletto's paintings are open plans and large scapes. This piece is framed by an ornamented arched window that lets the viewer see only a small part of the city. The dark frame places the viewer inside the famous Doge's Palace, one of the most distinguished buildings in Venice to date.
The inner court has a similar design to the rest of the city, and from the back of the buildings, it's possible to see the dome of some iconic structures like St. Mark's Basilica. The left-hand side of the building is a large wall filled with arched windows. The number of arches expresses the magnificent size of the building. Several people are on the square.
The sky doesn't advertise a bright and sunny day, but there is light shining onto the side of the building and shadow cast from the left wall, suggesting sunlight and brightness. The viewer can have a closer view of the gorgeous architectural details of Canaletto's works on the frame and the railing of the window.
