London seen through an arch of Westminster Bridge, 1746-47

Canaletto learned about painting early in his life. Even though the prominent artist was born in Venice, he moved to Rome early in his life. His father, also a painter, brought him and his brother to Rome to work as theater scenery painters. That was his first contact with art. Soon he came back to Venice, and there he started following the work of many artists, among them the relevant architect and painter Giovanni Paolo Pannini, whose influence is evident in his pieces until the end of his career.

Moving back to Venice, Canaletto searched for a master and started working under the mastership of Luca Carlevarijs. Carlevarijs focused his work on architecture and cityscapes. He not only mentored Canaletto but also shared with him some of his art traders. The merchants soon showed more interest in Canaletto’s pieces than his master’s, and soon he became one of the most coveted artists in all Italy.

Back then, many Englishmen would visit Venice, and many of them would travel to buy art pieces. Many of Canaletto’s pieces ended up in the hands of Englishmen, and he became famed and acclaimed in England. Around 1730, several changes occurred in Canaletto’s career. He associated with an English art dealer called Joseph Smith, who not only enforced the commercialization of his pieces to England but also had an active input in his artistic process. Smith influenced Canaletto to paint smaller, portable versions of his large scapes, so tourists could acquire the works and travel back home, keeping the pieces safe and adequately packed. That worked for a while, but ten years later, the War of the Austrian Succession cause tourism to diminish and the art market to be nearly wholly disrupted, leading Canaletto to move to England in 1746.

There he produced several series of views of London, including several aspects of the Westminster Bridge. And while most of his pieces represented the bridge itself as a part of the landscape, this painting shows the view from the bridge itself and has the river Thames as the main character. One of the arches of the bridge frames the beautiful landscape, showing the vast body of water filled with vessels. Around the river, the artists illustrated London’s iconic buildings showing his impressive technique and attention to detail.
