Canaletto, born in Venice, was the son of the painter Bernardo Canal. His mononym Canaletto means little Canal and refers to his father’s name. He was the apprentice of his father alongside his brother, and they worked painting sceneries for theater. Due to this experience, Canaletto had extensive contact with art. Still, it was when he returned to Venice around 1719 that he dedicated adequately to producing paintings and artworks. He had great admiration for the architect and painter Giovanni Paolo Panini and followed his steps. Soon, he surpassed his master and became even more relevant than Panini, becoming one of the most significant painters of cityscapes of Venice to this date.
It is unclear what year this piece was produced, but it was between the years of 1730 and 1734. The famous Piazza di San Marco is the protagonist of the piece. The artwork is built in a one-point perspective, with the focal point pointing straight into the center of this magnificent building. It was often said that this area was not only the most relevant in the city but its very soul. Palazzo Ducale is the main point in the background. Its architecture is rather exciting and unique. We can see several domes and arches that frame the front doors, and the building is ornamented with a deep and intricate architecture. On the right-hand side, there is a tall tower. This tower is so significant that it is visible in other paintings that portray the other side of this Piazza. If we walk straight ahead of this building, there is the large quay that is the main entrance to Venice from the Adriatic Sea, and Canaletto painted several relevant views of this place in other paintings.
In this painting, the artist makes a significant effort in representing the place as it was, and be as close as possible to the landmarks and the building details. We can see some people spread around, casually going on with their days.
A unique atmosphere is present in this painting. While most of his pieces represent bright sunny days, in this one, we can observe the imminent arrival of a storm. Behind the buildings, far in the horizon line, there is the sea. Near the line, the colors of the sky darken and form a dark mass of clouds. They contrast with the bright sky that permeates the right-hand side of the painting, showing the path that the storm is about to roam.
