Canaletto’s first occupation was as a theater scene painter, as an apprentice to his father. Along with this craft and inspired by the painter and architect Giovanni Paolo Pannini, he started reproducing the life in the city and the people around him through new paintings. Soon he would be one of the most important painters of his time.
Most of his early work was painted by nature, which means that the artist would use direct references from the beginning of the process until completion. Later works would be finished in the studio, merging real-life references with imagination.
Return of the Bucintoro on Ascension Day is a gorgeous example of one of these populated vivid works. It shows the procession of boats that filled the quays in Venice on Ascension day. This festival had been one of the most important yearly celebrations of Venice, and it honored the victory over pirates in 998. Also called Wedding of the Sea, or in Italian, Sposalizio del Mar, the celebration would happen when the Bucintoro, a large flat bottomed ship, would leave the Adriatic sea waters and return to Venice. The vessel spotted in the background near the buildings, is a landmark in this painting. Around thousands of small boats and gondolas, he stands out. Not only its majestic size brings out the gloriousness of the ship, but also its vivid colors of red and gold.
The perspective in this painting is rather interesting. While the boats are spread around the entrance of the Venice port, the buildings are opening space for a broader perspective where we can see far ahead into the city.
Around the entrance, two grand buildings complement the landscape. There is a tall strategic tower on the left and two columns with monuments on top of the in the middle of the entrance to the city.
Even though we can see a consonant color palette, lots of details in red and gold stand out here and there, yet, the subtlety of the blue sky and the color of the water, along with the fact that the people on the boats are searching for shadows under hoods and umbrellas, indicate that this is a bright warm day.
