Plaid Sweater is an incredible 29 x 24 in. (74,93 x 61,28 cm) oil on masonite panel by the American painter Grant Wood. Plaid Sweater was painted in 1931, one year after Wood’s national hit-piece American Gothic, and now belongs to the Stanley Museum of Art's Collection. Wood made his name as both a landscape and portrait artist, in the first case depicting the surroundings of Iowa and in the second focusing on the singular identities of people influenced by the Northern Renaissance and its attention to detail, surface, and individual identity. Plaid Sweater is an incredible portrait that belongs to the artist’s creative peak.
Plaid Sweater was painted on a considerably large panel. It features the portrait of a local boy from Clinton named Mel Blumberg. Some of the accounts of the portrait's history are found in the writings of Wood’s sister, Nan, who made her best effort to preserve her brother’s legacy after he passed away. When Grant Wood was discussing with her that he wanted a non-artificial depiction of the boy, he appeared in the plaid sweater, which the artist thought was perfect for the portrait. Holding a football, Mel Blumberg became a sort of archetypal figure of the American boy under Grant Wood’s unmistakable brushwork.
In the artwork, the boy is centralized. Instead of facing the viewer, he casually looks to the right side as if observing something happening far away. He has a calming expression and a subtle smile on his face. The boy has smooth brown hair, and his face is painted in the hard-edge manner that characterizes Wood’s work, with a strong shadow projected on his neck. He wears a sweater with a red, white, and burgundy pattern full of detail, which contrasts with the more organic background.
In his right hand, the boy holds a large ball, which matches the color of his trousers. His brown belt is open. With the left hand, he is holding a black cap that only appears partially. Beyond the boy, there is beautiful scenery, with reddish trees similar in color to his clothes, keeping a unifying color harmony through his palette. The leaves and trees in the background are painted with great detail, and the whole painting mesmerizes with its Realistic unique treatment.
