FRAMING INFORMATION

Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.
This oil on canvas, whose title translates to “Farmhouse with birch trees” was painted in the 1900s. Birch trees were a popular theme among painters back in the day, as they would represent the growth of the young and the season of spring. Although Klimt only started painting landscapes by the end of the 1980s, this is one of several paintings where the artist showed his profound skills in observing and painting his surroundings and his great ability to portray nature in a new, non-traditional style. For starters, the painting is not horizontal. The squared canvas brings a new perspective to what a landscape could be represented. Another noticeable thing is that instead of aiming for the realism seen on wide panoramic landscapes, he would characterize details and colors. This is a detail that is observable not only in these landscapes but also in his famous portraits. Lastly, Klimt uses again the resource of awkwardly cropping the view to a nontraditional composition. The observer can’t see the treetops nor the higher branches but is left with a perfect foreground view of the middle of the trunks.
The space of the squared painting is mostly occupied by the green meadow, which covers a good part of the picture, as Klimt uses a high horizon line. The field is represented in three different moments: the front is covered in small brilliant flowers, colored in yellow, red and blue. We can observe the development of a similar work with the flowers on other of Klimt’s paintings like The Pear Tree and Cottage Garden with Sunflowers where he uses his vigorous brushstrokes to define the shape and pattern of the floral ground.
To the left, the meadow field of grass is not mowed, so the leaves are not only taller but also painted with a darker and cooler shade of pine green. There are a few red flowers in this area of the field. The back part of the meadow is trimmed very low from the ground and has no flowers represented in it.
The foreground is branched by thick organic trunks of birch trees. The trunks stand out from the rest of the painting due to their light brown coloring. They have dark brown striped details. On the back, the horizon is defined by dark trees and tree trunks, with few gaps between them from where it’s possible to see the proper lightness of the background.
