This famous oil on canvas captures the very essence of the Symbolism. It was created in the year of 1907, the peak of Klimt’s Golden Era and its format is nearly squared, with 77 x 83 cms. The subject matter, the Greek myth of Danäe, was a popular theme in this era and many other artists portrayed the myth. Danäe would have been mortal and imprisoned in a tower of bronze by her father, King of Argos. There, she would have been visited by the god Zeus and later became the mother of Perseus. Danäe represents the divine love and transcendence.
In this painting, Klimt represents Danäe curled up wrapped in a purple veil. The color purple would represent her royal lineage. It’s possible to see that the transparent veil has a thin thread and delicate fabric. Some golden stamps are visualized around the parts of the fabric that are gently laying over the maiden’s body.
The maiden is laying down cuddling up and embracing herself. She has long ginger hair that falls over her shoulder in curls. One of the strongest symbolic representations in this painting is her facial expression, that shows the sexual arousal resultant of the visit. She has her eyes closed and rosy cheeks. Her pale skin is beautifully portrayed in tones of beige, rose, and pink.
Between her legs runs an intense stream of golden particles that represent Zeus visiting her. Her parted legs and lips are a clear representation of her sensual experience that would lead to her motherhood. It’s an erotic painting, from the position of the model to the color palette chosen (the red lips and hair) to the stockings, rolled down up to her ankles. Its subtlety refers to the mythological anecdote to lead into these profound interpretations. It describes the moment that Danäe and Zeus would be conceiving Perseus. This painting could have been seen as provocative at the time, and even rejected by the artistic society, however sensual representation of women was becoming more and more famous.
Klimt drew a series of sketches in preparation for this painting and asked a couple of models to pose for him in revealing poses. The golden details added to her hair, veil and textures of the painting serve to attenuate the intensity of the artwork and deliver the subtle, indirect tone of the final work.
