Klimt’s Farm Garden is a towering accomplishment and idiosyncratic of his landscape works, sitting at the end of a long period of development and experimentation in his reproduction of the vigor and energy of the natural world. Klimt’s rather unconventional view of nature - busy and overcrowded with life and opportunity for growth - mirrors the energy and enthusiasm of his work at the time. With a marked independence of form, an almost impossibly dense garden is shown in full bloom, highlighting Klimt’s masterful command of the tactility of light and visual experience of texture. Like his Poppy Field, Farm Garden surveys its subject and highlights multitudes rather than individuals. Standing in contrast to his figurative work, Klimt’s landscape paintings stand as a testament to a truly modern and existential approach towards mankind and wildlife.
The lush and poetic Farm Garden is emblematic of the artist’s gradual turn away from his fixation with the human body. Following his highly decorative and ornamental Gold period, Klimt became more self-reflective in his old age. His landscape works, while numerous and outstandingly accomplished, are lesser-known and little-understood. For much of his life Klimt traveled for rest and recuperation in the countryside of Central and Southern Europe, enjoying the spectacular diversity of light and shade. It was the perfect backdrop for a subtle yet, at the same time, radical experimentation with composition and style. His subjects were the orchards, woods, gardens, and villas around the Attersee, his sanctuary and place of rest from the decadence and experimentation of his studio. However, within his landscape work Klimt was also able to soak up the traditions and trends of the era, demonstrating the influence of Japanese art, Cezanne and his fellow Vienna modernists.
