This is a powerful, colorful piece created by Gustav Klimt around the year of 1906. The brushstrokes on this painting are vigorous and define the petals of the smaller flowers. One of its most striking aesthetic features is the use of the diagonal lines to differentiate the foreground from the background. Yet, there is no proper sense of horizon or perspective on first sight. A dense body of flowers could appear to be a flat wall full of flowers and leaves of different sizes and shapes. With closer inspection, it’s possible to peer into the real composition of the piece and notice a delicate and beautiful perspective and depth work.
On the foreground, the first things to draw the attention of the viewer are the large, vibrant yellow sunflower heads. The few sunflowers have also large leaves drawn on a warmer yet darker shade of green. Following the path of sunflowers down to the picture, the eye meets equally vibrant luscious bush of white daisies. The two bushes are very round and have pointy leaves on a cooler shade of green.
The path towards the background of the painting is portrayed in a lighter green color, sprinkled by purple, blue, wine and yellow flowers. These flowers are more sparse and form a beautiful set of colors, popping the colors of the foreground sunflowers and drawing attention to this perspective effect.
As the observer moves the eye farther along the perspective lines, there is both a path of vibrant red flowers with yellow cores and white flowers with red core on the right corner. These flowers grow darker and less spread towards the top edge of the picture.
The relationship between the diagonal lines, the sizes and vibrancy of the colors as well as the arrangement of the layout create an intricate yet fascinating perspective to the viewer.
This painted was created during one of the last years that Klimt was part of the Vienna Secession movement. The objective of this group was to bring foreign young independent artists to showcase their work in Vienna and publish their work on its own magazine.
Farmergarden With Sunflower is also a piece of work that stands out among the others created around these years, as the artist was being well recognized by his Golden Phase when he started working with the characteristic gold leaves.
