The Gold Cavalier is an interesting experiment made during Gustav Klimt’s golden era where he used several different materials to compose the piece. Klimt learned the gold leaf technique with his father, who was a gold engraver and helped the artist master the engraving technique.
Shiny stones, metals, glass and metallic materials were used to create this precious aesthetics of a Medieval or Victorian era, that matches the theme of this painting.
A beautiful horse stands majestic permeating good part of the area of the size of the squared canvas. The dark horse has a long mane and tail and is adorned with a jeweled halter. The halter has a red probably leather headstall and detailed reins. The saddle is pitch black, contributing to the high contrast with the golden knight. The horse is portrayed in a realistic style also contrasting with the rest of the Art Nouveau style parts of the painting.
The protagonist of the piece is definitely the golden knight. He stands up on the saddle, holding a golden sword. He is portrayed entirely in a bright gold leaf with no texture or details that he stands out from everything in the painting, despite the large number of details, jewels, and metallic pieces.
The background is a classical Klimt. The bright green grass is spotted with specks of tiny flowers, creating a pattern. The lack of depth and use of symmetry are also very characteristic of his style. On top of the grass, another pattern with flower continues upwards. Larger flowers that merge into a more intricate pattern occupy the rest of the space of the background of the canvas, giving the scene and idea that the knight would be standing in front of a tall hedge. There is a gold string on the bottom, darker than the gold leaf used on the knight.
On the Golden Cavalier piece, it’s possible to observe influence of several moments of Klimt’s career, from the realistic murals he profoundly studied during the completion of his art course in Vienna, visible on the horse, to the peak of his career on the Art Nouveau golden era, on the shiny cavalier in bright armour. Because of pieces like this, Klimt was appointed one of the fathers of the Art Nouveau movement.
