Gustav Klimt painted Maria Munk three times, being one of them on her deathbed after her passing away. This piece is the third portrait and it’s famous for being one of the largest female full-length portraits created by the artist. It’s 6 and half feet high and features the beautiful woman.
The artist started painting this portrait around 1917 and was discovered unfinished after his death in his studio, along with several other unfinished paintings.
The figure is right in the center of the image, and it’s possible to see sketches and marks that would serve as a guideline for the artist to finish the painting on top of them. It’s a fascinating piece, as it’s possible to get closer to the artists' process.
Her face is beautifully finished, while her body is only sketched. The skin tones and details are already represented on her face and hair. She has a curly bushy brown hair that contrasts with her pale skin. The skin tone is pale white, giving her a nearly sick expression. Dark eyebrows shape her smooth gaze. Her eyes are staring into the viewer with a dreamy expression. She is smiling and her cheeks are tinted with a colorful rose tone.
There is a series of patterns and plans for the background already in place, but they get more scarce as we move towards the bottom of the painting. The base of the painting is still left as an empty area with no more than a pastel pink tone, no textures or drawings on it.
The background has several flowery patterns. On the top left some blue flowers and swirls are painted and slowly merge with rounded large flower buds of several colors. These buds are all framed by dark green leaves and lead into little bushes with dark and red small flowers full of petals.
On the other side, the back of the muse is fully framed by these bushes. These bushes are filled with light and dark red and blue. The outer right part of the painting has bigger shapes rather than patterns.
The structural base of the background, right above the ground, is filled on both sides with patches of colors. Dark blue on the left and yellow on the right. These patches have sketches of what would become patterns later drawn into it.
