On more than one occasion Klimt enjoyed the beautiful landscapes of the lake Attersee to compose his paintings. He would travel there and do observational paintings. There is a series of different compositions from parts of the landscapes, the villages and some specific constructions built around the lake and the village of Attersee. In a few occasions, the artist would be located too far from the composition and would have to resort to binoculars and telescopes. This would affect his sense of perspective directly and would be evident on the final result of the painting.
In Schloss Kammer on the Attersee IV, Klimt paints the Schloss Kammer castle surrounded by a moat. The yellow walls of the castle set a sunny and bucolic atmosphere to the painting. The three-story-high construction is placed right in front of the trench and framed by beautiful bushes and trees of flowers. On the second floor, we can observe large high windows that circle the architecture of the building. Some of the windows have the blinds closed, and some of the windows are wide open, indicating signs of people living there. The top floor has small square windows, with no curtains or further details, but few of them seem to be wide open. The walls of the building are composed in several tones of goldenrod and yellow. The ceiling is low and dark, but there are some interesting gutter details. Behind the construction, there is a bright blue sky showing a beautiful day with white cottony clouds, from behind sparse treetops and dark trunks.
In front of the building, the trees were depicted in a Post-Impressionist dotted style where brushstrokes define shapes. Most of the trees and bushes are round green masses, but yellow, red and white flowers are drawn. The main door is covered in a dark green arbor. Underneath, the brown door shows the main entrance, but few details are visible.
One common characteristic between most of the Attersee landscapes in Klimt’s buildings is the lake and water ponds. The reflection is always an astonishing detail, where he mirrors the entire painting inside the water. He then develops the brushstrokes into a more vigorous and shades the color palette, portraying the reflection in the water with mastery and perfection. This would confirm the researches and prove that the artist would draw en plein air.
