The Wrestlers is an outstanding 252 cm × 198 cm (99 in × 78 in) oil on canvas by the French artist Gustave Courbet. The original painting was made in 1853 and now belongs to Budapest’s Museum of Fine Arts. Gustave Courbet was a radical proposer of Realism which overturned many of the rules of the 19th-century art circuit. Courbet remained an artist independent from the Paris Salon, an institution that dictated art in France since the preceding century. His work influenced much of Modern painting, both in subject matter and formal advancements. The Wrestler is an incredible picture that shows all of his skill and genius.
The artwork was painted on a huge vertical canvas, probably to remain faithful to a proportion similar to real-life. Along with The Bathers from 1853, this work was exhibited in that year’s Salon and was intended as its counterpart. While The Bathers attracted harsh commentary for its non-traditional way of dealing with the nude, something that Courbet kept through his entire career, The Wrestlers was mainly ignored, even though its monumental size and subject inspired other artists. In these two works, Courbet showed his innovative approach to the human figure, keeping a crisp, precise rendition of human anatomy while placing them in somewhat less obvious poses and situations, deviating from what the Salon’s critics expected.
The activity depicted is generally called French wrestling and was inspired by Greek-Roman wrestling. It was a match that happened in the Champs-Elysees. At the picture’s center, two men are fighting. Their bodies are rendered sculpturally, with a strong contrast through the shading to delineate their defined muscles. The man on the left pushes down the head of the other man with his two arms. They’re differentiated through their shorts: the one on the left wears a greenish-blue, the one on the right wears red. The fighter with tanned skin also has his head pushed down by his enemy.
The amount of detail on their bodies is impressive. The aspect of their skin, the fidelity of their muscles, and even the shape of the bones and veins in their tensioned bodies is incredibly well made. On the treatment of the grass around them and the scenery, Courbet took a more synthetic and pictorial approach, employing large strokes of paint that look like blotches when examined up close.
