The beautiful 115.6 cm × 149.9 cm (45.51 in × 59.02 in) oil painting entitled At the Moulin Rouge, The Dance was created by Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec. Born as a high-ranking aristocrat, Toulouse-Lautrec was one of the avid visual reporters of Parisian nightlife during Early Modernism. He worked closely with brothels and cabarets, producing graphic work such as posters and decorative images. Toulouse-Lautrec’s pictures from bars, moments of intimacy between prostitutes, balls, anonymous gentlemen, and ladies are today globally famous, captivating for their expressive style and gorgeous palette. At the Moulin Rouge, The Dance shows the interior of the cabaret in the middle of a restless night.
At the Moulin Rouge, The Dance was painted on a rectangular-shaped canvas. It dates from 1890, one year after the establishment opened. It depicts a crowded night at the cabaret. Toulouse-Lautrec worked closely with many establishments, and his synthetic and spontaneous graphic style was one of the main reasons for the success of these places. While working with oil painting, Lautrec’s manner is fluid, employs very diluted paints, and works based on contours and intense color harmony.
In the foreground, the first element that attracts the viewer’s gaze is the well-dressed woman in pink. While most of the image is dominated by a greenish light blue color, her soft pink vestments shine in the environment. Her hat also has some elements in yellow, being the warmest color combination in evidence. She looks to the front, and the audience is allowed to see her profile. To her left, a couple is dancing. The woman holds the edges of her dress, and her red socks also are a strong attraction point. Dancing with her was a pretty famous figure: Valentin the Boneless, a Moulin Rouge star teaching the can-can.
Around them, and covering a considerable part of the background, other figures are dancing, walking, and talking with their black capes and jackets. Some individuals have strong, colorful blue faces, some pink, others white and light green. At the top, the wall floral pattern contrast with the yellow and orange lights at the top. Blue blotches are spread in many areas and blend from the ground to the figures and walls, giving an overall cold sensation to the image. At The Moulin Rouge, The Dance is an impressive snapshot of one of the most agitated and celebrated spots of Parisian nightlife.
