Jacques-Louis David was a French artist, one of the most expressive and influential Neo-classical painters. Friend of Napoleon since his time as general, the painter became the official painter from the French Empire after the Bonaparte ascension. David depicted many moments of the short republican time, including the Consecration of the Emperor Napoleon, Napoleon Crossing the Alps, and Napoleon in his Study.
Commissioned by Emperor Napoleon in 1804, this masterpiece was concluded in the first month of 1808. The canvas is huge, scaling almost 33 feet wide and 20 feet tall, a work of art as big as the talent necessaire to produce this legendary painting. Using a rich palette of colors to better represent what the artist witnessed with his own eyes, the costumes and furnishings were depicted with great realism and details.
Soaked in glory with his victories on Italy and Egypt, Napoleone di Buonaparte was one of the most well-succeeded generals in French history. Using his recent conquests, he managed to earn the support of the proud population and, in November 1799, made the famous coup d'état. A few years later, with political and religious support, Napoleon has become Emperor of France, the scene displayed in this painting.
In 1804, Napoleon had his moment of greater glory in his life. He gathered his court at Notre-Dame Cathedral, in the city of Paris, and crowned himself Emperor with the Papal blessing. The scene in the painting depicts what happened after Napoleon's coronation, with the new Emperor crowning his wife, represented on her knees and humbled, Joséphine de Beauharnais. The French Emperor described himself at that moment as a "French knight".
Besides the Imperial couple, illuminated by a beam of light, David painted the other protagonists on the altar. On the right sits the Pope, surrounded by bishops and cardinals. Behind them, some great dignitaries sent from different parts of the empire, using colors and symbols of nobility like the globe, the scepter with an eagle on top, and the hand of Justice. Napoleon's family is represented in the painting by having his brothers and sisters on the left side of the canvas, including Letizia Bonaparte. The Madame Mère did not attend the event, but following the Emperor's instructions, Jacques-Louis painted her there as well.
