1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.
One of the most prominent Neo-classical painters, Jacques-Louis David, was born in the year 1748. Active in the political scene, he was one of the Maximilien Robespierre supporters until the end of the Reign of Terror, and later, he became one of the more solicited painters from Napoleon Bonaparte, being responsible for many astonishing oil paintings. After the revolution, David changed his style, leaving the Roman way of painting behind. He started to feature more air-brushed and painterly characters, instead of promoting muscularity and the ideal of human greatness, like Raphael did in his career.
Arrested in 1794 for being a member of the Committee of General Security, Jacques-Louis David planned this masterpiece during his years in prison. David decided to paint an oil canvas depicting the Sabine women trying to stop the conflict between the Romans and the Sabines, in honor to his wife that visited him in the Luxembourg Palace, where he was being imprisoned. The theme of the work of art would be love prevailing over violence, pleading for the people to reunite and stop the bloodshed that the revolution brought to his beloved France.
In this magnificent painting, David displays Hersilia, daughter of Titus Tatius, and Rumulus' wife standing with her arms wide open, trying to stop the furious soldiers from both sides. Next to Hersilia, and also trying to prevent the conflict and to protect the children, are other Sabine women portrayed with delicate brush strokes. Wearing a white dress and looking at her husband, Romulus, Hersilia stands in front of a multitude of soldiers bearing spears and swords. Most of the men are without clothes or armor, which was later justified by David in the endnote from the Le Tableau des Sabines, Exposé Publiquement au Palais National des Sciences et des Arts.
The leader of the Sabines, Romulus, is shown in the painting holding shield and spear, ready to slain Tatius, who is depicted as frightened and retreating. Touched by his wife's actions, he holds his attack and gives his rival a truce. In the background, the painter shows the Tarpeian Rock at the side of the Capitoline Hill, in reference to the civil conflict that was happening in Paris. This marvelous painting, with great dimensions that is one of David's trademarks, is now housed at the Louvre museum.

Free shipping is included in the price of the painting. Once the painting is ready and dry enough to ship, we will roll it and ship it in a sturdy cardboard tube.

If, in the unlikely event you were dissatisfied with the painting after reviewing it in person, it can be returned for a full refund for up to 365 days after delivery.
When you receive the painting; you are free to return it for more revisions or else for a full refund minus our actual shipping cost -- which is, on average, $35 per painting.
1st Art Gallery provides a full warranty covering manufacturing and material defects for paintings purchased from our website. The warranty covers damage for normal use. Damage caused by incidents such as accidents or inappropriate use are not covered.
Depending on the degree of damage to the warranted painting, it will either be repaired or replaced. This warranty service is provided free of charge.
