A Woman Of Ambition is an incredible 142.2 x 101.6 cm. (56 x 40 in.) oil painting by James Jacques Joseph Tissot. James Tissot was a 19th-century artist praised for his stunning artworks based on the social conventions of the Victorian Era. Seldom compared to John Singer Sargent, Henri Fantin-Latour, and Edgar Degas, Tissot was very well-succeeded during his life, even being envied for Sargent for his charisma and skill when dealing his works. Shortly after his death, Tissot’s work became ostracized by the rise of 20th-century Modernism. However, from a contemporary perspective, his work has been justly placed in the Art History canon. A Woman of Ambition is a reworking of an earlier composition called The Ball, showing a couple arriving at a fancy event.
A Woman of Ambition was painted on a rectangular canvas. The artist probably chose this format so he could show the entirety of her dress. One of the remarkable traits of his work was his ability to render the surface and volume of clothing flawlessly. Some scholars assign this to Tissot being born into a clothing merchant family, explaining his familiarity with the material. Either way, the artist worked doing covers and illustrations for Vanity Fair, and his affinity for fashion shines through his paintings. The many folds in the woman’s pink dress, its details, and the fan she holds are dominant elements of the image, contrasting with her intense black and smooth corset.
The Ball, mentioned previously, already suggested that the woman was merely using her accompanying gentleman as a tool. This interpretation is emphasized since both images are focused on her figure and face, covering the man’s face. The title on this one strengthens this meaning. While The Ball mainly showed the woman, here, Tissot added details to enforce his message: Three groups of men, at the painting’s edges and right next to her, look at her with curious gazes and seem to be subtly whispering and gossiping. The works by Tissot from this time were focused on moralizing issues, which appears to be the case here.
The audience’s eye travels through this game of gazes among this social circle with many detailed faces. On the top left, Tissot painted a glimpse of the packed environment inside, full of people from the bourgeoisie drinking, dancing, and having fun.
