Holyday (or The Picnic) is a stunning 76.2 × 99.4 cm. (30 x 39 in.) oil painting by James Jacques Joseph Tissot and now belongs to Tate’s collection. The picture was created in 1876, some years after Tissot arrived in England, where he attained a respectable career. Holyday (or The Picnic) is an example of how the painter approached genre painting, which is focused on social conventions, collective gatherings, festivities, and moral tales. While painting realistically, sometimes akin to an illustration, the artist had an incredible skill for harmonizing color. Holyday (or The Picnic) is a breathtaking image of a picnic, with its luscious warm palette and incredibly detailed manner.
The artwork shows a group of young people having fun in the foreground. A man with beige clothes is lying in the center, head resting on his hand while the woman to his left is pouring tea to him. On his right side, with her back turned to him, a woman looks beyond the painting’s limits while holding a cup of tea. Tissot painted perfectly many beautiful objects in front of them, such as glass bottles and silverware. On their left side, there is a child, an adult man, and an older woman, maybe the relatives of the main subjects.
The upper portion of the artwork is dominated by the tree’s yellow, orange, and green leaves. The tree’s branches create lines and points that attract the viewer’s eye. The background is made of deep green, showing the vegetation surrounding the place. Behind one of the branches, and partially covered by it, a man and woman seem to be subtly flirting, away from the rest.
The Holyday (or The Picnic) is an impressive painting by James Tissot. This work belongs to the artist’s most famous period. Tissot had his education in Paris with Louis Lamothe. Despite Lamothe being unknown nowadays, he gave classes to artists such as Edgar Degas.
In the French capital, Tissot got close to Degas, Manet and Fantin-Latour. After the Paris Commune, in which he took part, Tissot departed to England. There, Tissot’s work was highly appreciated; he sold very well and worked with magazine covers. In addition, Tissot’s eye for fashion is unmistakable. His bourgeois clients were delighted with how he emphasized their new and pretty garments, and his paintings from this period are, most of them, about bourgeois leisure time.
