Too Early is a captivating oil painting by the artist James Jacques Joseph Tissot and is dated 1873. Born in a family of drapery merchants, Tissot took this familiarity and knowledge of clothing and fabric to his pictures. As a result, his works are some of the most fabulous pieces of the Victorian Era, showing its customs, clothes, and many social events. Unfortunately, Tissot's work was, for many years, overlooked and labeled as superficial or glossy. However, due to historical revisions made over many 19th-century artists in recent years, his work was once again well regarded. Too Early shows, as its title indicates, the beginning of a party. People are chatting, and a few musicians are either already playing or rehearsing.
Its treatment is very realistic, a powerful trait in Tissot's work since his early days, which only mildly changed when he entered a more religious-focused period. This technical refinement that is across all his paintings is indebted to the now-forgotten Louis Lamothe. Little is known about Lamothe and his work, but he taught both Tissot and Edgar Degas, becoming an artistic consultant of the latter.
Too Early presents the viewer with ten people inside a salon. At the composition's center, there is an old gentleman in the company of three ladies. In a red dress, one of them has her back to the audience and her hands to her chest. She partially covers another woman, who has a fan on her hand and wears a white dress. Finally, on the man's left side, a woman with a white dress seems to be holding his arm and is very close to him.
Tissot, as stated previously, was from a family in the fabric and clothing business. His interest in it shines in his picture: he renders clothing in a beautifully detailed way, as can be seen in the dresses of the women. In this aspect, Tissot acted as an almost documentary register of his time.
The painting bets on a narrative aspect, too: on the extreme left, we see three musicians talking to a woman. Above them, a beautiful chandelier hangs. Between them and the group of the center, a door is open, and two children are subtly peeking into the party. In the far-right, a man and a woman, maybe a couple, are talking to each other by the entrance. Too Early is a beautiful genre painting heightened by its subtle yet enticing details.
