Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.

Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.

For some time, A Lady at the Virginals with a Gentleman was attributed to Frans van Mieris the Elder, not because of the style or for doubts about the paternity of the piece, but because there was a significant mistake on the reading of the signature. The scene shows a young woman with her back turned to the viewer, sitting at the end of a room. By her side, there is a man standing up. His facial expression suggests that he could be singing along with her while teaching her a music lesson.
This scene has several classical elements from Vermeer’s pieces, and with no more than a quick look it’s possible to establish a relationship with other paintings like Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window, Woman Holding a Balance, The Glass Of Wine, and others. The main characteristic of his artworks is the layout. In the above mentioned, as well as in A Lady at the Virginals with a Gentleman we are always looking at the corner of a white, plain room. The windows are on the left-hand side and are the primary source of light, usually covered with stained glass or colored curtains. In this case, the glass is plain, but the windows have a complex design and are adorned with decorations, especially the bottom part. The walls, paintings, and objects form a geometric grid, giving a sense of stability, but there are always objects breaking this and creating tension.
In this case, we can observe the floor pattern, the instrument behind the girl and a blue chair. They are placed diagonally, contrasting with the perfectly aligned architecture of the place. There are two large and beautifully adorned glass windows which let in a lot of natural light that shines through the whole scene. It’s possible to see the nuances and differences in the glass window reflected on the back wall. Two other common elements in Vermeer’s pieces are the thick draped carpet and the white jug of water. They are placed on the foreground, creating a certain intimacy on the scene, making the viewer feel like he is entering the scene. This is a painting filled with details, so Vermeer used a color palette that is a little more diverse than his other pieces, but it’s still revolving around the primary red, blue, and yellow.
