Girl with a Pearl Earring became famous by this title around the end of the XXth century. The painting had several names since its creation and it is one of the most famed and known pieces produced by Vermeer.
The painting shows a portrait of a girl. She has her left-hand side turned to the front and is turning her head to stare straight onto the viewer. Vermeer used to paint ordinary scenes and day-to-day scapes with regular people, but this girl seems to be wearing a different dress and an exotic outfit and some sort of turban - that alone makes this painting stand out among his body of work. The girl has a meaningful gaze and a compelling look. Her eyes and the famed pearl earrings are reflecting the light, that has been thoroughly studied over the years. At some point in time, a Dutch astrophysicist suggested that the jewelry wouldn’t be made of pearl, but instead of some other polished material, for its reflexion and the shape of the light represented in it.
This detail catches the most significant part of the painting, framing the amazingly detailed face of the girl, her interesting headwear and the earring that brought this painting and possibly even the name of Vermeer to light. The solid source of light shines from the left-hand side and creates a gorgeous sense of contrast on the wrinkles of the cloth and the shapes on her face. The part of the headpiece that outlines her face is painted in a pale bright tone of blue. Over it, an equally bright and pale yellow piece of cloth covers the rest of her head and drops from the top of the ensemble down her shoulders.
Her face is pale and rosy, and all the details are painted with delicacy and subtlety, to the point that it's almost hard to outline her eyebrows properly, making her eyes stand out even more. She has a beautiful pair of round brown eyes that emerge from all the pale brightness of her face. Her mouth is half closed, and her peachy lips seem to have been adorned with some sort of cosmetic. It’s possible to see the white and yellow collar of the outfit, and all of that is placed on a dark and plain background. The lack of context makes the girl seem even more intriguing and exquisite.
