FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.

This exciting and intriguing painting received different names across the history of art, and many assumptions were made about who the girl was and why Vermeer painted such a significant piece of this muse. This painting is one of the most significant artworks of the Dutch Golden Age.
The painting shows a girl standing on her left-hand side and looking at the painter. Vermeer was known for being one of the great masters of light. In this painting, he creates a mysterious environment by placing the model against a completely dark background and no architectural details. While most of his pieces were set on a specific scenery, portraying his characters with an intimate relationship with the scene, the Girl with a Pearl Earring stands against nothingness and looks almost ethereal. In this section, the most striking details are cropped. The face of the girl and the headband are framed, leaving the pearl earring as a protagonist right in the middle.
Another interesting detail about this painting is that, when Vermeer used to paint most of his muses with fair pale skin, the Girl with a Pearl Earring looks ruddy and almost bronzed. The beautiful tones of beige and brown on her face are soft and round, and she has a very delicate complexion. Her dark piercing eyes are looking straight into the viewer. Her peaceful and impactful expression is one of the most astonishing characteristics of the painting. Her mouth is ajar and is colored with a red and peach palette. The light shines onto her from left to right, so the back part of her head fades into darkness.
Over her forehead, a thick and wide blue band frames her face, not letting any detail of her hair out. The pale blue fabric shows some texture and folds, creating a strong contrast with the shaded area. On top of this band, there is a yellow drapery that helps wrap her hair and falls over her shoulder. This fabric is also portrayed on a pale palette on a very light and soft shade of yellow, as well as being textured by the light and darkness. There is a little white collar showing from her outfit, but not many details are visible.
The pearl earring is shining bright, standing out in the middle of the darkness. It shows its perfect roundness, and it’s almost as if it was reflecting the rest of the scene, what led some researchers to suggest that the famous pearl earring was actually a polished metal piece.
