For some time, researchers speculated about the real authorship of this piece. Apart from the small size, the artwork was also painted over a panel, being that Vermeer produced mostly canvases. However, on a more in-depth analysis, the technical masterwork and the impeccable finishing later let no questions about it. Vermeer produced this piece around the year of 1666, and it’s still a mystery whether it’s a portrait or if it’s an unknown character created from a mixture of people the painter met.
The entire painting is interesting and somewhat mysterious. We can see only the lady's bust, but it’s still evident she is wearing an opulent dress made of thick blue fabric. The dress has thin, beautiful details, and along with the ornamented collar, show that this woman adequately dressed for a formal occasion. The focal point is the red puffy hat. The light casts onto the scene from the right-hand side of the viewer, as if there was a window opened there. The light highlights the beautiful vivid red hat covered in fur, and there is a lot of contrast between the top and the bottom part of it.
Her face is delicate and detailed. She is looking ahead with her brown piercing eyes, and it almost looks like someone called her or something drew her attention precisely at this moment. Her mouth is half opened, and most of the tones on her face are pale, except for her peachy mouth and rosy cheeks. Her dark hair is pulled behind, shadowed by the hat and face, and from the middle of the shadows pops a spot of light that is her earring.
In the back it’s possible to see a panel painted, suggesting that she is on a posh place or an event. The panel portrays green and beige pigments, fading away and enhancing the vivid colors of the main character on this layout. There are two wooden pieces also brightened by light in front of her, possibly the backseat of a chair.
This work is small yet impressive. The light is subtle and achieves a deep sense of realism. Even with the exaggerated contrasts, we have the feeling that the lady is sitting by the side of a window, being brightened by sunlight.
