FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.

In this portrait, Vermeer once again steps away from the rest of the Baroque movement, when most artists were taking commissions to paint biblical stories and noble people. He brings to life the daily life of a servant in the middle of her daily chores.
The portrait shows a young maid wearing a nice blue dress right in the middle of the scene. She stretches her right arm and opens an adorned mosaic window that frames the left corner of the canvas. To her right-hand side, there is a tapestry on the wall that looks like some sort of map. The fabric is ochre yellow, and it even seems a bit faded or old. On the bottom of this tapestry, there is a wooden ornament.
In front of her, there is a table covered by a red adorned tablecloth. There are yellow and blue details all over the cloth. On top of it, there is an opened box and mass of fabric crumbled on top of the chair that stands behind the table. The chair has a leather backrest attached with round tacks to the wooden back. On top of the table as well there is a large metal deep plate where the water jug is resting. The woman is holding the pitcher as if she was about to lift it.
The woman has her head covered by a white headpiece that matches her shoulder pieces. It’s just a simple white piece of cloth, with no details. The dress underneath, however, is a beautiful vibrant blue dress. The top part is a blue and yellow corset that shapes her body. The top part of the dress is made of a thicker material, has two large loose sleeves and the shades of blue on top are less vivid than the rest.
The peached-skinned woman is simultaneously opening the window and lifting the jar, so it’s possible to see her delicate skinny arms. Her face is candid and naive. Once again, Vermeer draws the details on the woman’s face with such elegance that they almost disappear in the middle of the painting. Yet, it’s possible to see her satisfied facial expression and the half smile on her lips. The scene is brightened by a light that comes through the glass window. So the left-hand side of the woman and the composition are lightened. The contrast is subtle and the color palette, yet limited, is very significant. Once again Vermeer sticks to the primary colors to produce beautiful tones and different details and textures.
