The incredible 112 × 137 cm oil on canvas titled Orpheus Leading Eurydice from the Underworld was created by the famous French painter Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. In the early 1850s, accompanied by his fellow artist Charles-François Daubigny, Camille Corot began to paint in the region of Auvers-sur-Oise, where he deeply engaged with en plein air painting. Corot would quickly become the most appreciated painter in France, being recognized by institutions and seen as a Master figure by the Impressionists. However, despite his emphasis on landscape painting, Corot was always interested Neo-Classical themes and worked on mythological subjects his whole life, as in Orpheus Leading Eurydice from the Underworld.
The painting was executed on a sizeable rectangle-shaped canvas. Even though Corot was a Modern master for many, he still clings to Classical themes even in the high phase of his maturity. The tale depicted in the picture narrates Orpheus’ descent to the Underworld so he can rescue Eurydice. Eurydice was set up by a satyr who chased her. She fell into a viper nest and, bitten by them, died. Orpheus was a famed musician, and he played and sang the whole night, making every God and mythological being weep while hearing him.
Orpheus descends into the Underworld, where his composition skills touch Persephone and Hades, which allow him to take Eurydice back. The condition is that they had to walk with Orpheus leading, and he shouldn’t look back at any moment. After he had just left the Underworld, he turned his back, and she vanished forever because Eurydice was still in the Underworld realm. This is the version of the narrative as presented by Virgil. Plato and Ovid also have their own perspectives on the subject.
Orpheus Leading Eurydice from the Underworld was painted with a soft and impressive palette with many tone grades, giving a dreamlike or memory aspect to the picture. Orpheus and Eurydice are in the foreground on the right side of the painting. He holds an arp and conducts Eurydice with his other hand. Beyond them, there are a group of lost souls observing their journey. The image is dominated by muted greens and a soft blue from the clear sky. This masterpiece captivates it with its intense atmosphere and stunning treatment.
