The oil painting Parisian street scene by the Russian-born artist Jean-Georges Beraud is a masterpiece of French Impressionism and depicts a typical scene in late nineteenth-century Paris. Beraud shows life in the French capital on a spring or summer day. He is well known for his interest in capturing the daily life of Parisians during the so-called 'Belle Époque.' This period between the end of the nineteenth century and before the beginning of the First World War was characterized by optimism, peace, and economic prosperity in the French capital.
Like in many other of his paintings, the composition is divided into sidewalks and streets. Two elegantly dressed women in the foreground are turned towards the beholder and are opening the composition up. Only their facial features are rendered in detail and therefore function as an entry point for the composition. They are the only women in the whole painting. Men engaged in conversation, reading newspapers, cleaning the street, or doing other chores fill the rest of the road and sidewalk. The women stand out because their faces are somewhat individualized; they are also dressed more elaborately and colorful. For example, the woman's red hat to the right is one of the only patches of color in the otherwise quite silvery painting.
Furthermore, the foreground is also characterized by an exchange of glances: between the lady crossing the street and the beholder, the lady with the red cap, and a gentleman sitting on a bench close by and openly observing her. According to the visual language in this painting, the artist gives an interesting insight into the artist's view on life in late nineteenth-century Paris, which was dominated by the male upper class. Behind the ladies, the sidewalk and street are shown slightly aerially, allowing him to compose the sidewalk and the road together. The choice of this perspective draws the beholder right into the hustle and bustle of Parisian street life full of people and carriages that are rushing through the city. Beraud highlights this perspective further by rendering the people in the foreground in detail.
In contrast, the further the objects are in the background, the more impressionist they are painted by applying the paint very loosely. In this painting, Beraud created an atmospheric impression of a typical day in Paris, however, only focussing on the city's upper class.
