This oil on canvas painting, produced in 1885 and now in the hands of private collectors, is connected with Jean-Léon Gérôme’s wider collection of harem and bathing scenes. It is purported to portray a scene in the baths of Brousse, the French name for the Ottoman city of Bursa, in what is now Turkey.
The fact that in this painting Gérôme takes the effort of specifying the location of the scene is interesting by itself since the artist was not in the custom of localizing his harem and bath scenes geographically. Indeed, because almost all bathing and harem scenes take place in enclosed spaces, they could have occurred mostly anywhere in the East, which played along with the Orientalist practice of portraying Easterners devoid of identity.
But this painting is, for some reason, different. Either because the city is famous for its ancient and sumptuous thermal baths, built and continuously expanded by Ottoman rulers, or because of the city’s relevance as an early capital of the Ottoman Empire, Gérôme chose to identify the geographic location of the scene portrayed. Considering the latter, it is likely that the local holder of power would have been an extremely important man in the wider Empire, and that thus his harem would have been of special import.
Regardless, the painting is an exquisite portrayal of how Gérôme saw, or imagined, the daily life of the odalisques, and is replete of small details that set him apart from the artist’s other similar paintings. Only here, for example, is a child portrayed in the environment of the harem, even though it is little blond toddler being held by a clothed servant.
Another aspect that differentiates this painting from others is that only here do we see the odalisques relating in a friendly manner with the servants, whose body is covered from the waist down. In other paintings, we would usually see a relationship of service and subjugation, while here we can see, in the very center of the painting an odalisque and a servant casually walking with their arms around each other in a gesture of relative intimacy.
Even though this is not among Gérôme’s most famous paintings, it might be the one where he comes closer to depicting the actual lives of his models, instead of presenting them as idealized exotic receptacles of one’s gaze.
