This piece is among a series of paintings produced by Jean-Léon Gérôme exploring the theme of Moorish women bathing circa 1870. It was, in fact, a rather common subject matter among Orientalists inside the Academic Classicism movement, and it was representative of the European attitudes towards the exotic Orient.
Here, a light-skinned brunette woman reclines by a water fountain with her long hair touching the water. Behind her, a dark-skinned woman in servant’s clothes kneels behind clay jugs and amphorae, preparing a white mixture in a basin in front of her, presumably some soap to attend to the nude woman in her bath. The nude woman carries on with her bath as if she were completely alone, oblivious to the presence of her companion.
The scene takes place in the inside of what seems to be a Moorish palace, although the columns in the background are of strong Roman influence, which indicates that the current owners are occupying a much older structure, which by itself could be construed as a statement on the European view of the East as underdeveloped occupants of a glorious European past.
Beyond the columns there seems to lie a much greater structure, hidden behind the dark corridors, suggesting this palace belongs to a powerful person. A delicate beam of light shines over the nude bathing woman, which would indicate a palace with open ceilings, a feature that could only exist in warm weather, especially over a place destined to bathing.
It is not without reason that scenes of a bathing light-skinned woman accompanied by her dark-skinned servant are such a mainstay of Orientalism in the 19th century.
The combination of the sexualized figure of the Moorish, almost European woman, and the servile African reflects much of how the European man saw not only the distant reality of the Orient but also their own.
On the one hand, the light-skinned woman portrayed in the nude fulfills the collective unconscious ideal of colonisation, while on the other the servile African corroborates with the stereotypical inferior enslaved people, but happening in a distant barbaric land, since such a direct relationship of servitude would have no place in an enlightened modern society like Europe, all the while catering to the male heterosexual imagery of the fragile feminine held in place for his gaze. More than an expertly crafted image, a testament to the mentality of the 19th-century artist.
