It portrays in its foreground an Arabic man cradling the head of his horse, which has succumbed to the inclement desert. It is a very emotional scene, the last moment between the owner and his loyal animal companion, without whom the man is also likely to perish soon. It portrays not only a personal scene but a whole cultural ethos of what is almost a symbiosis between man and animal.
Adding more verisimilitude to the scene, Gérôme depicts in minute detail each aspect of the man and his horse’s attire. The man has most of his skin covered, a necessity in the desert where lack of protection from the Sun can mean blisters and insolation, and we can only see his hands, left uncovered to guarantee dexterity and the upper part of his face. Other parts of his body are covered by layer upon layer of light-colored cloth, which serves to protect him from the sun and the wind.
Recumbent with its head on its master’s lap, the masterfully painted ginger horse is magnificent even in its demise. Its orange hair glistens in the sun, even though its tail lies lifeless on the ground. By using composition and posing, Gérôme depicts a fully realized animal full of emotion, as if at that moment it had developed the consciousness needed to look meaningfully into the eyes of his master.
In the background, sand covers and sifts through a landscape made of stone. The majesty and greatness of the setting reinforcing the emotion in the scene by implying an arid, ruthless and extremely dangerous environment.
But more than a beautiful portrayal of an emotional last goodbye between horse and rider, and more than a sublime landscape, in this piece Gérôme is portraying a whole aspect of a culture. The tribes of the desert are highly dependent on their horses and camels for their survival, and as such great care and effort are put into maintaining the animals without which the tribe would surely perish. The artist, by portraying a specific relationship, enables us to understand the whole wider culture behind it as he saw it.
