Finished in 1889, a period of great productivity for the artist, this oil on canvas piece belongs within the greater series of harem and bathing scenes painted by Gérôme throughout his career. Now in possession of a private collector, this piece stands out from the rest of the series as almost a study, seeming almost unfinished if compared to its peers.
It portrays in its foreground a pair of women bathing, where one of them scrubs her feet sitting on a cage, her dark hair bound in a bun behind her head, while the other observes. Her expression is on the brink of interaction as she watches her partner in the scene from down below, partially submerged in a pool of crystalline water, her long hair unbound.
Both women have European features but are inserted in an Eastern background, which is not an uncommon aspect of Gérôme’s work. He portrays his models always in exotic backgrounds, an artifice that allows his audience to enjoy the sight of the female body as they would consider aesthetically pleasing while still retaining an image of property and intellectuality. Like many of his contemporaries, Gérôme uses the excuse of anthropological study to validate their yearning to gaze upon the nude shape.
But what makes this painting different from other harem and bath paintings by the artist is its background. Containing a servant, as well as a group of women either preparing for or leaving their baths, it lacks the level of detail and focus found in Gérôme’s other pieces. Instead, here only the two women in the front are focalized, while the background is left almost as if unfinished, with apparent brushstrokes and blurred contours.
If such characteristic was indeed purposeful, it could be construed as a late variation in the artist’s usual style, perhaps an attempt to make his scenes look even more realistic by mimicking optical deformations. That being the case, then Gérôme hoped to insinuate even more focus on the two bathing women in the front, using the blurry effect as well as a composition to make them the center of attention.
A candid picture to be sure, and either a window into the artist’s process or an attempt at innovation, loading the scene with desire and emotion that would not be as present in his usual style.
