Arguably Gérôme’s first great success in the artistic world, this oil on canvas also known as Young Greeks Attending a Cock Fight was first presented in the 1847 Paris Salon, where it was quite well received and purchased by one Mr. Roux-Laborie. It is one of the exemplars of what would be called the Neo-Grec style, later included in the Academic Classicism school. Gérôme produced it soon after facing rejection at the Prix de Rome, and would have been tentative to exhibit his work again so soon, but was convinced otherwise by Paul Delaroche, his teacher. The painting is now in view at the Musée d'Orsay, in Paris.
Portrayed in it are a young man and a young woman sitting nude at the foot of an old fountain, partaking in a bout of cockfighting. Their youth contrasts with the venerable fountain, which is cracked and eroded by time, its aged evidenced by the state of decay of the sphinx which adorns it. Behind them, a blue Mediterranean sea and sky landscape frames the scene.
The piece is, in fact, rich in contrast. Just as youth contrasts with decrepitude, so does the male and the female, which is reinforced by the relation between the roosters in the composition. The lush vegetation behind them contrasts with the dead branches and leaves at their feet, just as the liveliness of the two young people contrasts with the roosters fighting for their lives, one of them doomed to die.
But, in the contrasts, we also find similarities, especially between the roosters and the younglings and their body language. The young man is the agent, interacting with the cockfight at their feet, just as the brown rooster that he holds is moving menacingly towards its opponent. The young woman, on the other hand, tries to distance herself from the action in a subdued manner, just as the dark rooster moves defensively to rebuff its opponent hostility.
The roosters, then, reflect and amplify the relation between male and female as perceived by Gérôme and his contemporaries, where the male advances and, with an air of curiosity, attacks the female, while the female retreats in chastity, accomplishing her duty to rebuff advances by the opposite sex.
Innovative in its time, the painting divided the critics. While some called it weak and artificial, others lauded it as a brilliant example of the wonders of color and movement in painting. The general public agreed with the latter, and thus Gérôme’s name as an artist was established.
