One of the very rare instances of Jean-Léon Gérôme departing from his usual medium, oil on canvas, and instead of producing a beautiful piece employing chalk. Drawn circa 1876, this comparably small piece is now in the hands of private collectors.
It portrays a mounted man, possibly Arabic, watering his horse at an old overgrown fountain, accompanied by two of his hounds. The canines are rather lithe creatures, and their rib cage is visible through their skin, but they do not seem ill in any way. On the contrary, Gérôme takes great care in drawing the animals’ muscular legs, perfect for chasing down prey.
The man, or rather, the hunter, is leaning against his saddle, with a long-barreled musket or rifle laying across his lap. His face is not visible, partly due to his headgear, partly because it is not drawn in the acute detail usually employed by the artist in his work. This is not to say that this piece is in any way beneath others produced by Gérôme, but that the focus of the drawing is not on the rider himself.
Instead, Gérôme has spent a great deal of effort in detailing the architecture and vegetation surrounding the hunter. The wide leaves of the plant that grows from the back of the fountain are exquisitely drawn, with light bouncing off their smooth surface in a variety of angles.
The architecture is also treated with a great deal of respect here, and the watchful observer can make out every detail, every nook and cranny and every carving on the wall behind the fountain and the plants. Gérôme’s infatuation for Eastern architecture provides us, then, with an almost photographic depiction, which makes it seem almost like two distinct pieces were perfectly and seamlessly bound together.
This piece is a demonstration that Gérôme’s Orientalism went far beyond portraying exotic people and animals. In fact, here he portrays hounds that look more to belong to certain European breeds made for racing, which would make them less interesting to his audiences. Instead, the observer’s eyes are here guided to the setting, the background, the architecture and the plants that would have seemed rather exotic for a Frenchman such as the artist.
