Jean-Léon Gérôme transformed the genre of history painting through his painterly – almost photographic - reproductions of both factual and mythological figures as living and experiencing beings. An exemplary representation of his craft that connects his Orientalist and Academic styles is his 1874 canvas Markos Botsaris, a figurative reproduction the hero of the Greek War of Independence that played a big part in freeing the nation from centuries of Ottoman rule.
Gérôme's work was influenced in equal parts by the French Neoclassical painter Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, whose everyday interpretations of the Greek classics made him immensely popular in his day, and Paul Delaroche who, as well as being Gérôme's own teacher, took an almost melodramatic approach to painting historical scenes, rendering the human qualities of anecdotal experience as paramount. Gérôme forged this new and idiosyncratic style early in his working life, developing his own unique balance between imaginative reproduction and documentary mise-en-scene. In this regard his Orientalist worlds and the mythical or historical world of his other works were almost interchangeable. As a technical master and much-lauded member of the French Academic tradition, Gérôme's painting would prefigure the monumental bombast of mid-twentieth century Hollywood history epics in technicolor.
Gérôme's painting Markos Botsaris is an erudite and analytical reproduction of the Greek national hero, and can be seen as the genesis of the artist's Neo-Grec period. The Neo-Grecs were a short-lived group of artists that were bent on forging a new vision of ancient Greece, based on archeological accuracy. The movement breathed new life into the genre of history painting. In Gérôme's Markos Botsaris the subject sits in deep contemplation. Having just freed his nation from almost four hundred years of Ottoman rule, Markos Botsaris sits surrounded by Islamic calligraphy, a Persian-style rug, and other elements what would, to contemporary eyes, have bought to mind the Orientalist world of the Ottoman Middle East. The image is a paradox, and Gérôme's skilful crafting of this history scene made him a master of the genre.
