Public Prayer in the Mosque of Amr, Cairo

Ever impressed by Muslim religiosity and its relative egalitarianism, Jean-Léon Gérôme produced this oil on canvas in 1871, after his travels through Egypt and the Middle East. The highly detailed painting in now in possession of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York through the bequeathal of Catharine Lorillard Wolfe, who purchased it in 1874.

It portrays an internal scene in the 17th-century mosque of Amr, in Cairo. Although the building was still standing in Gérôme’s time, it is unlikely that he had witnessed prayer in the actual mosque, as it had fallen in disuse long before his time. In all likelihood, the setting was composed using a variety of sketches and photographs of other places visited by the artist in his travels.

The scene is a slice of Muslim life, the moment of prayer each of the faithful undertakes five times a day. Here, we can see multiple lines of men, all facing Mecca as is customary, each one deeply focused on their prayer. There is no one leading the prayer, even though larger mosques tend to have an Imam or speaker, although that is not strictly necessary. This aspect of Islam was especially admired by Gérôme, in comparison with the highly clerically centered Christianity that pervaded Europe.

Further, Gérôme depicts here a great variety of people, big and small, young and old, rich and poor. From the wealthy dignitary with his heavily armed retainers behind him to the holy man in a loincloth, from the white-bearded elders to the child whose height barely reaches his neighbor’s waist, they all share the same space and conduct their worship in very similar ways. The artist goes to great lengths to evidence the great social differences that are made even in the religious space, depicting in minute detail the attire of each man.

In his admiration for the openness of Muslim faith, Gérôme depicts the place of worship as an open space where all are welcome, from the wealthy emirs to the destitute anchorite, even to the pigeons that fly among the lofty columns and beams adorned with censers, lamps, and bells. If the setting is a composite of many different mosques, the crowd is a composite of human types put together to reinforce the idea of egalitarianism.
