A l’Eau! is an oil painting by Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida. Today hailed as one of the great Spanish masters, Sorolla came from a humble family, conquered his education through grants, and started to exhibit all around Europe by the mid of his career. After reaching certain notoriety and establishing himself, Sorolla began to focus on pictures of the Valencian working class. With his depictions of fisherfolk, portraits of his own family at the beach, and kids playing at ease on the shore, he entered the hall of the greatest painters. A l'Eau! is another example of the neverending creativity that the artist found with such a straightforward subject.
While only a teenager, Sorolla y Batisda entered the Escuela de San Carlos. Already nourishing the habit of drawing, since he had lectures on it in a school of artisans, Sorolla developed his draughtsmanship and was initiated in oil painting. He was reasonably well-received locally in his first years, but he always aimed to gain international fame. After finishing military service, he applied for grants and became a Spanish Academy student at Rome, where he completed his artistic education. There, Sorolla mastered the Academic conventions of oil painting and became familiarized with its subjects, which served him well later when he was still getting acquainted with the art market.
While in Italy, the young artist visited many cities, being inspired by the Old Masters and studying their works intensely. Probably taken by the breathtaking Italian views, the painter began to create landscapes of the places he went. These works were well received and the beginning of a shift in his oeuvre. After returning to Spain, he settled in Madrid and Valencia. When he began to exhibit in the Paris Salon, Sorolla shifted his themes to beach scenes and Valencia's local settings. These works show his most personal style, in which simplified forms and brushstrokes give a sensation of immediacy and an almost photographic quality to his compositions.
A l'Eau! is a brilliant oil on canvas by Joaquín Sorolla. In the picture, we see probably the artist's most fashionable subject: children playing on the beach. A boy is naked, wearing a yellow hat, and we can only see his profile, while the girl, who is holding his hand, wears a pink dress and has her face turned in the direction of the sea. They are both entering the ocean. The sand was painted smoothly, creating a sensation of light through grading, while the sea was done in small and fast brushstrokes.
